We are thrilled to announce the newest addition to the Upsite Systems team! Ben joins us as a Business Operations & Solutions Associate, bringing a fresh perspective from the Zicklin School of Business and a "get-under-the-hood" technical background. We sat down with him to talk about his journey from the classroom to the IT front lines.

Ben, welcome aboard! With a BBA from Zicklin, you had plenty of options. What drew you to Upsite Systems and the world of Business Ops?

"I’ve always taken a pragmatic approach to my career, prioritizing roles where I can drive tangible impact. Upsite sits at a fascinating intersection of that goal. Over the last few years, we’ve seen a total paradigm shift in employment, ranging from remote work to the rise of Employers of Record. While I initially viewed these changes through an individual lens, I’m now captivated by the macro-level follow-on effects. I want to be part of building the tools for this evolving landscape that don't even exist yet. And, of course, I’d be remiss not to mention that I’m a firm believer that you can’t go wrong with a bit of a Swiss touch."

You’re a bit of a "Swiss Army Knife"—you have the business degree, but you also completed an IT apprenticeship. How does that technical expertise help you when talking to clients or managing sales?

"I’ve always seen my multi-faceted background as one of my greatest strengths. Knowing both ends of the business to tech spectrum gives me the ability to adjust my language to the person I’m interacting with and making sure we can communicate on the same wavelength. In an environment like Upsite, it also comes in extremely handy when it comes to understanding a potential client's technical wishes, even when they don’t fully know them yet."

The Zicklin School of Business is known for its rigor. What’s one core lesson or framework from your BBA that you’re excited to apply to our internal operations?

"One of the most valuable takeaways from my time at Zicklin was the emphasis on Systems Thinking. It taught me to view a company not as a collection of departments but as a series of interconnected processes where a shift in one area, such as moving to an EOR model, impacts the entire ecosystem.

At Upsite, I am excited to apply this by looking at internal operations holistically. I want to analyze how our new tools impact our broader operations and how they influence our clients on a larger scale, reaching beyond the individuals we interact with to their departments and the organization as a whole."

You’ll be wearing a few different hats here, from sales outreach to optimizing our internal workflows. Which part of the "Business Ops" puzzle fascinates you the most?

"Puzzle' is definitely the right word. It has been fascinating to see how powerful the new Foresight tool is, and finding the right slot for this new piece is something I really look forward to.

The part of the puzzle that fascinates me most is the translation between the client experience and the development team. I enjoy the challenge of ensuring we fit smoothly into an established process, or in some cases, identifying where we can uproot an outdated process and replace it with something more efficient. That feedback loop between sales outreach and internal optimization is where I think the most impactful work happens."

When you aren’t diving into spreadsheets or troubleshooting systems, how do you spend your time in the city?

"While I love the energy and buzz of the city, now that temperatures are reaching a more comfortable level, I have been back in the parks almost daily. I usually spend my time in Central Park or Carl Schurz Park. With everything starting to blossom, it really feels like the world is opening up and ready for the taking. It is the perfect environment to clear my head and get inspired, or to simply lay down and let the world pass by for a few minutes."
